- Jaguar Land Rover hosts international Technician of the Year competition
- South African winner to face off against international competitors
- Contest reinforces commitment to employees and technical skills development
Pretoria, November 2015 – Two top graduates of the Training Academy at Jaguar Land Rover South Africa and sub-Sahara Africa (JLR SA and SSA) are now set to participate in the company’s international Technician of the Year competition.
The event will take place in the UK on 3 November, at Warwick Castle. Jaco Scheepers of Jaguar Land Rover Bedfordview will face off against his peers, and will be joined by Choomlesh Aumeer of Axess Limited, the Jaguar Land Rover SSA distributor in Mauritius.
The competition will see all of the best technicians from Jaguar Land Rover’s top markets around the world being pitted against one another. Both theoretical and practical skills will be put to the test in a series of challenges that will see the winner walking away with more than just the title of best Jaguar Land Rover technician in the world – there is also a grand prize, details of which have been kept closely guarded.
Earlier this year Jaco Scheepers was honoured as the inaugural winner of the local round of the Technician of the Year competition. In addition to taking the top honours he was also given a R270 000 cash prize – a unique incentive for technicians in the local motor industry.
“Not only was Jaco’s prize well deserved, we also wanted to highlight the fact that technicians have many opportunities for career advancement at Jaguar Land Rover,” says Rory Beattie, Director of Customer Services at JLR SA and SSA. “To ensure that they develop their skills and remain challenged we’ve developed the local competition, and now also participate in the international round.”
The local Technician of the Year contest evaluates technicians based on their aptitude and attitude, all of which are measured through their performances at dealerships and the Training Academy. Technicians who excel are those with the ability to solve problems correctly, the first time around, as well as maintaining their knowledge of all Jaguar Land Rover products.
“The training I get at the Jaguar Land Rover Training Academy is brilliant. There are things here I’ve never seen before. Right now I’m doing revision on all the material to make sure I am as prepared as possible,” says Scheepers. “I have no idea what the prize is at the competition. A prize would be brilliant – but ultimately I’m doing this for the accomplishment, to say and know that I’m the best in the world.”
