SuperVee Championship settled in bumper SA Endurance support races

Seventy four cars across three categories entertained spectators at the Three and Nine-Hours of Kyalami for the season-ending Southern African Endurance Series motorsport extravaganza.

North vs South Single Seater Festival including SuperVee Championship

The SuperVee Championship was settled in rounds five and six at Kyalami over the weekend headlining an exciting line-up of racing action.

The SuperVee competitors enjoyed four races over Friday and Saturday where 13 drivers took to the world-famous circuit for their season finale.

Lushen Ramchander arrived at Kyalami one point adrift of Jeandre Le Roux but in a cruel twist of fate, in Friday’s first single-seater race, Le Roux’s engine blew on the start line while his title rival won both races on the day, clinching the 2024 Liqui-Moly backed championship. Franna Jacobs in his Forenza SuperVee ended second with Mark Tucker in third.

Friday’s second race saw Ramchander take his second win from Grant Will with Kosie van der Merwe rounding out the podium.

Saturday’s opening race went to TV actor Franna Jacobs with Phillip Bellingan in second and the newly crowned champion Ramchander in third. The final race of the season went to Ramchander from Jacobs and Tucker.

The North vs South Single Seater challenge, an invitational race for five different single seater classes saw Dewet Booysens take a dominant win in the opening race on Friday, followed by Allen Meyer and Jannie Gerber, all in Formula Volkswagen racers.

Gerber made amends in the second race taking the chequered flag 1.1 seconds ahead of Tyler Robinson and SuperVee champion Lushen Ramchander.

Saturday’s pair of races went to Booysens once again from Meyer and Robinson. The final challenge race saw Booysens take his third win of the weekend from Robinson and Meyer.

Lotus Challenge

With the Lotus Challenge season completed 22 racers accepted the invitation to race at Kyalami. The first race on Friday saw Jeff Gable take a 2.1 second victory over Andre Human with JP Nortje completing the podium.

In class L, the overall Lotus Challenge champion Nick Hodgson took the win from Graham Hepburn and Juan du Toit. The final race on Saturday was another Gable benefit with Human and Nortje again filling the podium.

Hodgson showed his champion’s credentials with another class L victory, ahead of Wez Maxwell and Graham Hepburn.

SA GT Super Trophy and Sports and GT

Dawie Joubert took his wild, bewinged Lotus Exige-Ferrari to a storming win on Friday afternoon heading off the Ginetta G57-Chevvy of Craig Jarvis by 5.6 seconds with Brazilian Porsche Cup racer JP Mauro taking a fighting third in his Mercedes-AMG GT3, taking the SA GT Super Trophy win in the process.

Mo Mia brought his Porsche 911 Cup car home in fifth from Sun Moodley’s Porsche 911 Cup machine.

The second race on Saturday saw Joubert spin at turn two on the opening lap with Mia unable to avoid the stricken Lotus. Mia’s Porsche suffered terminal suspension damage and the race was red-flagged to clear the circuit.

When racing resumed, Jarvis’ thundering Ginetta took a very narrow 0.8 second victory from Mauro and Kashen Naicker’s BMW M3 GT3.

The exciting SuperVee Championship has been awarded National Challenge status for 2025 and will be a regular race series with the SAES tour next season along with the MRSSA Superbikes.
