New book on Kyalami’s 60 year history nears completion

A large format coffee table style book of more than 400 pages covering the history and memories of 60 years of Kyalami history is nearing completion and is expected to be available in May 2022. Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit - 60 Years of Memories, 300mm x 300mm in size, with more than 400 pages covering the 60-year period of the iconic circuit’s existence. The book, which contains over 1200 images, many never previously published, is split into four major sections

This commemorative publication covers 60 years of international and local events hosted at the Circuit and makes use of many, previously unseen, images to illustrate its amazing history. Importantly, it additionally contains personal memories from great racing drivers and riders, officials, photographers, journalists, and numerous other personalities who have played a role in creating 60 Years of Motorsport Memories.

The iconic, world-renowned Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, situated between the major South African cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria, celebrated its 60th Anniversary in 2021. The first race meeting took place at the new circuit on 4 November 1961. The Circuit soon established itself as the premier motorsport venue in Southern Africa and became a firm favourite with international and local motor racing legends and their teams.

The Circuit continues to benefit from both an excellent climate and warm, South African hospitality which have added to its legendary status worldwide. Over the past six decades the Circuit has hosted many international events, including world championship F1 Grands Prix, Endurance and Motorcycle races.

The introduction gives an amazing insight - with several previously unseen personal memories of those people involved - into the the history and development of the basic circuit in 1961 to the pristine facility we have today.

The first section of the book covers the 60 years of motorsport events, both local and international, staged at Kyalami. The story begins in November 1961 and ends with the 2021 Kyalami 9 Hour held in February 2022. Each year’s motorsport activity at the Circuit and nationally, is summarised with the addition of period images and results of the international races and listings of the various South African circuit racing champions. This section of the book covers 120 pages.

The second section of the book details the races held at Kyalami from 1961 until 2022. Many of the hundreds of programme covers for these races are depicted in these 20 pages. Each page covers three years of race dates and selected programme covers.

The third section of the book is dedicated to 60 Years of incredible images from numerous well-known local motorsport photographers including Gavin Stapleton, Malcolm Sampson, David Pearson (, Roger Swan, Colin Watling, Woody Rodseth, Keith Doig, Johan Pretorius, Paul Blackburn, Eric Buys, and Tony Alves.

Over 800 quality images cover various themes and the various formulae and categories that have competed at the circuit over the 60-year period. The images contain detailed captions that cover images taken on track, in the pits and of the competing drivers, riders and teams. Many of these images have either never or rarely been seen in print.

The fourth section of the book covers 60 years of Kyalami Memories. This section contains over 200 special memories received from race drivers, riders, officials, motoring media, photographers, sponsors, marshals, race fans and others that have played a role in the 60 Years of history at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit.

This large format book will be launched and made available during May 2022.

All books will be printed on a pre-order basis with orders for the limited print run Publisher’s Edition and Standard Edition having opened on 1 April 2022. All copies of the Collector’s Edition of the book, which was limited to just 60 numbered copies, have all been sold.

Publisher’s Edition

The Publisher’s Edition of the book will be limited to 200 numbered and signed copies. The hard cover, with dust cover, large format book (300mm x 300mm) will be presented in a protective box. All 420 pages are printed on high-quality paper with both black and white and full colour images. Each book will be presented with a certificate of confirmation of the allocated print number. The Publisher’s Edition will also contain six unique prints.

Standard Edition

The Standard Edition of the book will be similar in size and layout to that of the Publisher’s Edition. The book will be presented with an embossed quality cover using the same paper as the Publishers Edition. The print run will be limited to the number of copies pre-ordered.
