2024 Sasol Solar Challenge: Solar Teams wrap up the scrutineering process

The much-anticipated 2024 Sasol Solar Challenge’s days of scrutineering are over  - with the event finally commencing on  Friday, 13 September in Secunda, Mpumalanga.

Teams from across the world have gathered on this 8th year’s edition of the challenge to showcase their innovative solar-powered vehicles, as they have prepared to compete in one of the most prestigious solar motorsport events in the African continent.

Competing for the 1st time in the SSC, the Italian, Ondar Solar Team said: “The scrutineering process was tough for our team, we experienced battery issues and had to work day and night to ensure that our car is ready to perform on Friday, 13th September.”  

Scrutineering is a critical phase of the competition, where each solar car underwent rigorous inspections to ensure compliance with safety and technical regulations.

Making its second debut in the Sasol Solar Challenge, Team Innoptus Solar Team said: “We are excited to experience what each city has to offer during the challenge as we journey to Cape Town. We also look forward to the schools programme because we are big advocates of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) in schools.”

The scrutineering process not only guarantees a fair competition but also highlights the engineering excellence and creativity of the participating teams.

During the SCC, Teams will be evaluated on various criteria, including vehicle safety, solar efficiency, and the overall design.

The Sasol Solar Challenge is not just a competition; it is a platform for promoting sustainability, mobility and renewable energy solutions.

One of the main goals for this challenge is to inspire the next generation of engineers and scientists.

Teams participating will have the opportunity to engage with the public, share their knowledge, and advocate for the importance of renewable energy in combating climate change.

As the teams prepare for the challenge the excitement is palpable.
