DP World drives road safety on South African national routes this festive season

DP World is running a Road Safety Campaign this holiday season in South Africa, where many people use road transport to travel to various destinations across the country.

South Africa experiences a high number of road crashes during this season, given the uptick in the number of vehicles on the road. Human error, due to unsafe driving behaviours, is another significant contributor to crashes on South African roads. To help reduce the number of crashes, DP World will be running a Road Safety campaign across major national road routes, encouraging road users to pledge to adopt better road safety practices.

To participate in the campaign, road users are encouraged to stop and rest at DP World activation sites to interact with the road safety teams between 07H00 to 16H00 (CAT) on 14 December and 07H00 to 12H00 (CAT) on 15 December. The teams will be present to engage with motorists and drive awareness around safe behaviour while driving, as well as the responsibility each member of the family has to ensure a safe journey. In addition, motorists can take their personal pledge for road safety at these stations. There will also be some fun activities involved which families can enjoy together, all in the spirit of improving road safety awareness. Some of the most impactful road safety pledges in the past have included not texting or using a phone while driving, not drinking and driving, not overtaking recklessly, and always driving within the speed limit.

This year's campaign will be held at two service stations: Engen Harrismith and Shell Escourt (South Bound).

Esha Mansingh, DP World’s Head of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability for sub-Saharan Africa, said, “As a responsible business, at DP World we are committed to creating a positive economic and social impact wherever we work, with safety being one of our key business priorities. We specifically prioritise sustainability and the positive impact on people in the communities in which we operate, and our festive season Road Safety campaign is testament to our commitment to improving the safety of people on South African roads. Our campaign has been well received by motorists over the years, as it helps them become more conscious about their driving behaviours and leading to better driving on the roads”.

DP World will also be activating a road safety awareness campaign that encourages truck drivers to prioritise road safety. The festive season is one of the busiest times for the logistics sector, and truck drivers play a key role in ensuring efficient and timeous delivery of goods during this period. These pledges are also aimed at supporting truck drivers by refreshing their road safety education and the importance of rest.

If you are travelling during the upcoming festive season, DP World encourages you do so safely and look out for our teams along your holiday routes. Remember safer roads start with you.
