Uber launches first burst of Uber Travel ahead of the festive season

Uber is excited to announce its latest innovative travel feature, Smart Itineraries, which is one of the features within the Uber Travel suite of offerings  that has launched globally. With the World Cup in Qatar in full swing and one of the busiest travel seasons upon us, Uber decided to expand its services to accommodate many of those increasing travel needs.

The feature allows consumers to connect their Gmail or Microsoft itineraries to the Uber app, where they’ll be able to coordinate rides, flights, and hotel and restaurant reservations.

Riders will earn 10% back in Uber Cash every time they book a Reserve ride with Uber Travel*, which means they can plan ahead and earn Uber Cash. Once riders connect to their Gmail or Microsoft account, Uber will do the rest, organising all reservation needs in one place for stress-free travel.

Mpho Sebelebe, Uber’s Head of Communications for South Africa explains, “We’re excited to introduce this new feature and enhanced offering to help you go anywhere with a little help from Uber. Uber Travel forms an integral part of Uber’s vision of being a one-stop shop for door-to-door travel”.

“We’re all going and getting this time of year, and this new and refreshed consumer experience is designed to make big moments like the World Cup and holidays a little less manic and a little more magical."

A Hat-Trick for Safety

To help make trips feel safer and foster a more respectful environment, Uber has an impressive roster of over 20 in-app safety features that aim to help give riders’ and drivers’ peace of mind before, during and after a trip. One example is the anti-discrimination button which makes it simpler for riders and drivers to report any incident that goes against Uber’s Community Guidelines. Channelling the spirit of the Football World Cup, Uber wants to help allow people from all walks of life to come together and celebrate their love of the game.

Some of the other interventions Uber have introduced include the emergency button, where emergency services can be dispatched to the location of the user at the touch of a button. “We are also piloting our new Audio Recording feature in Johannesburg and Pretoria with a national rollout in the next few weeks. This feature allows drivers and riders to record the audio of their trips and submit the recording to our support team in the event of a safety incident.”

Fight ‘Football-Fever-Forgetfulness’

If riders get caught up in football and holiday fever and leave something behind in a vehicle, don’t panic! The easiest way for riders to retrieve a lost item is to get in touch with the driver via the app - but if they’ve left their phone behind, they can log in to their account on a computer. Here’s what to do:

  1. Tap “Your Trips” and select the trip where you forgot your personal belongings.
  2. Scroll down and tap “Find lost item”.
  3. Tap “Contact driver about a lost item”.
  4. Scroll down and enter the phone number you would like to be contacted at. Tap submit.
  5. Your phone will ring and connect you directly with your driver’s mobile number.
  6. If your driver picks up and confirms that your item has been found, coordinate a mutually convenient time and place to meet for its return to you.
  7. If your driver doesn’t pick up, leave a detailed voicemail describing your item and the best way to contact you.
  8. If you lost your personal phone, enter another phone number instead (you can do this by logging into your account on a computer, or using a friend’s phone).

Sebelebe concludes, “No matter your choice of experience, whether it's staying home to watch your favourite team, or travelling to Qatar, Uber makes it easy to get around and get anything. So, while you’re travelling, let Uber worry about connecting you to your ride, while you focus on the love of the game and time spent with loved ones!”
