The hunt is on for Signature Motorsport MINI team

Preview: Sasol GTC2 Championship – Rd 6, Zwartkops Raceway, 18th August

Signature Motorsport heads into round six of the Sasol GTC2 Championship firmly in the hunt for championship points as Brad Liebenberg and Devin Robertson chase more wins in their MINI John Cooper Works racers.

The two Signature drivers hold second and third places in the championship standings, separated by one point after ten races around the country.

Three victories and three podiums for the Ferodo-backed Brad Liebenberg sees the youngster holding second place in the championship standings, 11 shy from the top position. Brad has an enviable record racing his MINI at the 2.4km Pretoria circuit: he has finished on the podium in six of the eight races so far and is aiming to continue that trend.

“The championship is really hotting up,” said the Ferodo driver. “Devin and I work well together to the benefit of the team and as we push each other hard, we’re catching and beating Keagan (Masters). The key to success at Zwartkops is a strong starting spot on the grid and a good getaway off the line. It is possible to overtake there although it can be risky; it is also quite easy to defend your position from attack from behind if you have a bit of experience of the track. The circuit suits the MINIs and with two of the remaining four rounds of the championship taking place there, it’s game on for the title.”

Devin Robertson has powered his Champion MINI John Cooper Works to two victories and four additional podium finishes this season and is equally bullish for the races ahead. “I had decent results at Zwartkops the last time we raced there. Brad and I have a common aim to take points away from Keagan otherwise we will never catch him in the championship. It’s hard to overtake at Zwartkops; realistically there are only three safe opportunities. The cars have been at the panelbeaters more than at the team’s workshops this year. I hope my fellow driver’s show some respect on track so the cars get back in one piece as the next race is only two weeks later.”

The Signature Motorsport team takes to the track at 09h05 for the all-important qualifying session. Race fans can meet the drivers on the grid walk at 12 noon ahead of the first 12- lap race at 12h10. The second race, from an inverted grid, takes place over 12 laps starting at 15h05.
