Standox, one of the global refinish brands of Axalta, has been supporting the OS.Car student racing team from the University of Applied Sciences (FH) Campus Wien for the last five years. The more than 40 team members have designed a race car to compete in the Formula Student series against student teams from around the world, and the race car is painted with Standox.
Motorsport enthusiasts from different disciplines from the University of Applied Sciences (FH) Campus Wien have formed the OS.Car Racing Team to take part in the Formula Student series, an international design competition for students that aims to emulate the supreme discipline of Formula OneTM. In line with the Formula Student regulations, the goal is to design and to build a race car within two semesters. Then, the OS.Car team competes on international racetracks with other universities from all over the world. For the competition, not only the design and manufacturing are crucial, but also the project management, organisation, marketing and public relations.
The students designed a particularly lightweight chassis made exclusively of carbon fibre for the racing car - the CR-118. When selecting Standox products for the paint shop, in addition to the focus on the durability of the paint system, sustainability was also key. The team agreed that only energy-saving products with alternative drying properties, for example drying at room temperature, should be used.
Before painting the design, the rough surface of the carbon fibre material was smoothed out. For this task, the Standox technical experts used the VOC Nonstop Primer Surfacer U7580. For the colour design of the race car, the well-known airbrush artist Air Philippe used the water-based Standoblue basecoat system. Standoblue shows its strengths in multi-tonal painting and impresses with its excellent drying properties. The Standox technical experts then chose the Standocryl VOC Xtreme Clear K9580, whose innovative binder technology delivers impressively fast drying results and excellent surface quality, even at room temperature. This meant the clearcoat met the sustainability requirements that the university team focused on throughout the entire project.
The race-ready CR-118 race car, with its sensational airbrush design, was presented at the beginning of June 2018 at University of Applied Sciences (FH) Campus Wien.
Andreas Auer, Business Development and Marketing Manager for Axalta’s Refinish Systems in Austria, says, "we are very happy to have contributed to the success of this extraordinary project and wish the OS.Car racing team every success."
