Another tough challenge for the AutObarn SuperHatch drivers

Another tough challenge for the AutObarn SuperHatch premier A Class drivers with only milli seconds separating Garland and Du Toit in the qualifying and both heats

Round 3 at the Zwartkops Raceway saw another huge tussle throughout the day between Brett Garland AutObarn/ Total/ Sabat/ Ingco/Honda Civic and arch rival Jonathan du Toit Trans Africa Racing Honda Civic which started in the qualifying and continued over both heats, with both drivers taking turns to lead the field. Tyre pressure and an understeer problem was a issue all day for Garland who fought hard to stay with du Toit but it was not to be. Du Toit took the two heats and overall for the day, with Garland’s two close 2nds and a 2nd overall.

“In qualifying I went out on the quickly warming Zwartkop track feeling confident for a top qualifying time, the track was good and my initial 2 laps inspired confidence, so on lap 3, I went for it and kept getting surprised through the fast turns 1 & 4, suspecting the tyre pressures was not a 100% right, so I settled for a low 1m14,” said Brett Garland.

“I went through the tyre pressures with the intention of correcting the under-steer issue I had in qualifying. Starting 4th on the grid due to the inverted grid from the previous round, I got a great start and managed to get into 2nd behind a very determined Werner Pieterse Scarlet Sun IDG VW Golf, with Jonathan right on my tail, on lap 2 in T2 I managed to catch and pass Werner but still had Jonathan right on my tail, then the understeer issue returned and going though T4 it started once again, I knew from this point I had my work cut out to stay in the running. Through all the right handers the car became an absolute handful, I held off Jonathan until lap 4 but ran wide, allowing him to get through, Werner and Andre Dannhauser eventually dropped out with engine issues which put them out unfortunately for the rest of the days racing,” said Garland.

Garland did some radical changes to the tyre pressures in race 2 to compensate for the excessive under steer! With only 5 cars in Class A, he was 4rd and Jonathan 5th on the grid the lights went out the front 3 cars jump started, Jonathan and I got away getting ahead by turn 2 and race was on with no under steer on lap 1 it was looking good, but then safety car came out a with the red flag, 2 cars from Class C were in the wall at T3, and all cars were back for a complete restart.

“Once the carnage had being cleared we restarted, I got a better launch and managed to stay ahead of Jonathan, hoping my oversteer issues where now behind me, I went all out stay ahead of du Toit, at the end of lap 1 we were 1 and 2 but unfortunately by lap 2 the issue returned and I knew it was going to take a miracle to stay ahead on Jonathan, a lap later he again got ahead and that is how it stayed to the checkered flag, we certainly have lots of homework to do for Round 4,” said a disappointed Garland.

Jonathan du Toit (TAR Civic) beat Brett Garland in a similar AutObarn machine and Chris Davison’s Precision Kadett Superboss taking 3rd overall in class A, while Zane van Zyl beat Louis Scholtz (Car Care Civic) and Melanie Spurr (G&H/Wealth Ave Polo) in Class B, Class C honours went to Reno van Heerden KWC VW Polo followed by Tony Hyams Building Code Consultants Ford Fiesta and Craig Priestley Tactical-Fluid Ford Laser
