Sandton, South Africa – The Sasol GTC Racing Team, the only team with two proven winners in its stable, goes into round six of the Sasol GTC Championship with high expectations for a strong performance in front of their sponsors at Zwartkops Raceway on Saturday, 12th August.
With five victories and four other podium place finishes so far this season between Gennaro Bonafede and Robert Wolk, the Sasol GTC Racing Team leads the overall Sasol GTC Championship standings where Bonafede has a 29 point advantage over his main title rival.
Expectations and pressure is starting to mount as the second half of the touring car series kicks into high gear with everything still to play for; with the team’s sponsor hosting the raceday, all eyes will be on the pair of Sasol Turbofuels™ Plus-powered BMW GTC racing cars from the moment they take to the track on Friday for three free practice sessions and the all-important qualifying session late in the afternoon until the flag falls on the second of two 17 lap races on Saturday.
Last time out at Zwartkops in June, Bonafede won one race and ended the reverse-grid second race in third place, while Wolk was in the top three in qualifying and claimed his best result of the year up to that point. Wolk went on to clinch his maiden GTC victory last time out in Port Elizabeth and will be in the thick of the action as he supports Bonafede’s title challenge.
Team Manager, Vic Maharaj is calm ahead of the challenge: “Although we will be the focus of everyone’s attention over the weekend, we will do what we always do best which is to give the drivers a car that is fast and reliable. After that it is up to them to maximize their opportunities in the races. We are very motivated for the balance of the season which starts at the Sasol Raceday. There is some added pressure to do well in front of our sponsors, but I view it as an opportunity to showcase the team to our sponsors and their guests and staff”.
Championship leader Bonafede is excited to be part of the Sasol Raceday: “There are a lot of interviews, photos and smiling to do before we go racing but that is all part of the atmosphere. Sasol is a dynamic sponsor and really leverages their involvement in the GTC Championship. I have to bank at least one win and a strong result in the other race. Everyone has lifted their game, as we have so it’s going to be a really tough pair of races but I am confident of a good showing at our home track”.
Having tasted the winner’s champagne Wolk is keen to get his hands on another bottle at Zwartkops: “Our home track and home event should be a strong event for us. I know Zwartkops well and I expect to be in a position to keep the other drivers honest! The team has historically done well there and this time around shouldn’t be any different. Banking a maiden win is a great confidence booster and I’m really looking forward to the Sasol Raceday”.
Motor racing fans will have an opportunity to interact with the team on Saturday, 5th August at Sasol Lyttleton, corner Selbourne Ave and Trichardt Rd, Lyttleton Manor, Centurion. Guests will be able to chat to the drivers and collect a signed poster, have their photo taken with the drivers and even enjoy a rare opportunity to sit in the BMW GTC car. The team will be on site from 11am to 2pm.
On race day, fans are welcome to come to the Sasol GTC Racing Team pit garage and watch the cars being prepared throughout the day as well as join the team on the grid for the Fan Grid Walk, scheduled for 11h55 just before the first race at 12h05. Race two, which sees the race one grid inverted, starts at 14h50.
