The New Year is in full swing – welcome back from your holiday and all the excesses that go with it, both on and off the road.
If you spent any time on the roads during your holiday, there’s a chance you may have incurred a fine without even knowing it! Fines SA is an innovative service that checks and manages any outstanding fines you may have incurred knowingly, or unknowingly.
The flashing of a camera light used to be our way of knowing to expect a fine in the mail, but modern speed measurement technology means you may be caught off guard. You may not be aware of fines you have incurred due to the average speed over distance system known as ASOD.
Fines SA can find out what outstanding fines you have, and save up to 20% off the total cost
What is ASOD?
“Average Speed Over Distance” or ASOD refers to a system whereby the average speed of a vehicle is calculated from the time it passes the first camera until it passes the second camera.
The average speed is then determined by measuring the time it has taken a vehicle to travel from point A (where the first camera is located) to point B (where the second camera is located). Reaching point B in a time shorter than determined by the distance and the speed limit, means that the driver was speeding. We have seen the introduction of Average Speed over Distance [ASOD] as a method of speed enforcement in most areas of South Africa.
Speed has always been a major contributing factor to road crashes, and as such, the implementation of speed limits and enforcement is absolutely essential. We need effective, visible traffic enforcement of all moving violations. If speed enforcement can be performed in a manner that allows more traffic officers to be on the road, it can contribute towards safer travelling for all.
