Firethorn Primary School Library and Resource Centre opening thanks to The Imperial & Motus Community Trust

Firethorn Primary School in Klipspruit-West, Kliptown, Soweto officially opened its library and resource centre today, which will support over 1000 learners from Grade R to Grade 7.

This library is the 73rd resource centre donated by The Imperial & Motus Community Trust, and is part of The Trust’s commitment to increasing reading skills and access to learning resources in underserved communities.

The library and resource centre is fully equipped and includes barcoded books, teaching aids, sports equipment, charts, board games, and IT supported programmes. Additionally, the library comes with a whiteboard, chairs, desks, carpeted reading areas, as well as two reading rooms, and will be managed by a trained library assistant. To support greening of the school premises and increasing environmental awareness amongst learners, 30 indigenous shade trees were also planted in partnership with Food & Trees for Africa.

“Through the library and resource centre, together with literacy and reading programme interventions that will be continuously delivered to learners at the school, we believe that this library can become the hub of a school and help support their own drive to promoting a healthy educational development for the learners in the community,” says Abdul Hafiz Mohamed, Chairman of the Imperial & Motus Community Trust.
