Development is more than money, machines or good policy - it's about real people and the lives they lead." - Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda

Africa's contribution to global manufacturing value-added is reported at just 2% despite housing 17% of the global population. However, there are signs that barriers to manufacturing such as the poor educational attainment of Africa's workforce and infrastructure barriers are improving which could unlock the massive potential on our continent and provide an opportunity for South African-based manufacturers to operate successfully in new markets.

Our Industrialisation in Africa course, presented by Mbongeni Ndlovu (Illovo Head of African Trade at TWIMS), aims to explore the practical measures for South African-based manufacturers to understand the market dynamics in key growth markets in Africa such as Rwanda, Kenya, Nigeria, and Ghana. The course also prepares course participants to take advantage of emerging regional opportunities through the application of a selection of strategic approaches to African expansion.

Specific attention is given to multilateral, regional, and bilateral trade agreements, including the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) that dominate international trade, and their strategic implications for different types of manufacturers. The course includes case studies on how South African-based manufacturers have been able to expand their operations on the continent, including agro-processing and automotive companies.
