Renault Group and EDF Group join forces to make electric vehicles more accessible and affordable for French consumers

Renault Group, the leading seller of electric vehicles in France, and EDF, the world's leading low-carbon energy company, together with its subsidiaries IZI by EDF and DREEV (a subsidiary of EDF Business Services), announce the signing of a partnership to accelerate the development of smart charging solutions for electric vehicles.

By combining the expertise of two major French industrial players, this partnership aims to make electric mobility simpler and more affordable on a daily basis. In particular, through smart and bidirectional charging management, it will help facilitate the adoption of electric vehicles in France, improve the purchasing power of French consumers, and strengthen the country's energy sovereignty.

Renault Group and EDF Group are developing technologies that enable electric vehicles from the Renault, Alpine and Dacia brands to return part of the electricity stored in their batteries when plugged in. Thanks to bidirectional charging, energy can be fed back into the grid. The vehicle becomes more than just a means of transportation: it can also help supply electricity for other uses. For owners, this translates into savings and enhanced value from the energy stored in the battery, without affecting the vehicle's day-to-day use.

This partnership aims to accelerate and simplify the deployment of electric vehicles by offering private customers, through Renault Group's dealership network, a comprehensive package including home charger installation operated by IZI by EDF and a smart charging management service. The benefits for customers are clear: greater convenience and lower electricity bills.

The agreement covers three areas of cooperation for single-family homes:

  • Commercialization and installation of charging stations;
  • Development of services to facilitate and optimize electric vehicle charging;
  • Creation of new services enabling the vehicle's energy to power certain household uses or be fed back into the electricity grid when needed.

These solutions are expected to be rolled out by summer 2027.

“Beyond technological innovation, this partnership provides a concrete response to two major concerns for French consumers: purchasing power and the energy transition. By helping to better manage charging costs and creating new opportunities to unlock value from energy, Renault Group and EDF Group, two French leaders, aim to make electric mobility even more attractive and accessible across the country,” said Jérôme Faton, VP Customer Experience & Energy, Renault Group.

“This alliance demonstrates how two leading French companies can join forces to advance competitive, sovereign and low-carbon mobility. EDF Group has extensive expertise in smart charging solutions, already deployed by our subsidiary Dreev to more than 100,000 customers across France and Europe. By combining innovative energy technologies and services tailored to consumers' needs, Renault Group and EDF Group are helping strengthen a national industrial ecosystem that creates value, jobs and innovation,” said Christelle Vives, President of EDF Business Services.
