The Ford Ranger has taken the lead in the double-cab segment for the first half of 2026. Data from Cars.co.za, based on Lightstone Auto figures, show 10 075 Ranger double cabs registered from January to June, ahead of the Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max.
The Hilux recorded 7 887 double-cab registrations, followed by the D-Max with 4 415 units. While the gap between first and second is significant, the segment remains defined by strong competition among the top three brands.

In the overall market, the Hilux remains the top-selling bakkie, with 18 862 units registered across all body styles in H1 2026. The Ranger followed with 12 472 units, and the D-Max with 10 068.
“The H1 2026 figures illustrate the ongoing competitiveness of South Africa’s bakkie market. The Ford Ranger leads in double cabs, but the Toyota Hilux maintains overall dominance, reflecting strong and sustained demand throughout the segment.” Alan Quinn, Chief Innovation and Product, Cars.co.za
Hilux remains the leader in the workhorse segment.
The Hilux led the single-cab segment with 8 101 registrations, followed by the Isuzu D-Max with 4 849 and the Mahindra Pik Up with 3 711. In the extended-cab category, the Hilux Xtra Cab topped the segment with 2 589 units, ahead of the Ranger Super Cab with 1 740 and the D-Max Extended Cab with 804.
The data indicate clear segment leaders, though competition remains dynamic. The Ranger leads in double cabs, while the Hilux continues as the overall market benchmark.
