Industry insight
The year 2021 brought many challenges for the global automotive sector. These included having to continue to learn to live and operate with the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as numerous supply chain challenges. The most notable of these being the global semi-conductor shortages.
Despite the challenges, total South African vehicle production improved by over 50 thousand units in 2021 to almost 500 thousand. While still well behind levels achieved pre-2020, the growth is encouraging, with total levels forecast to reach between 550 and 570 thousand in 2022.
